About Aikido

Aikido is a martial art that evolved as a Japanese discipline and is now popular throughout the world. It was created in the 20th century through the lifelong study of its founder Morihei Ueshiba, whom Aikidoka respectfully refer to as O-Sensei (great teacher).

Aikido aims at a better understanding and awareness of oneself and one's relationship with others and the environment. It puts the philosophical concepts of non-violence, reconciliation, mutual respect and love for peace into practice - to be used in daily life as well as when protecting oneself, others or society.

Aikido is defensive in nature - not by being passive or mere reacting, but by actively choosing non-violent resolution over resorting to violent destruction according to the situation at hand.

Being able to make that choice necessarily involves the ability to resort to force to end a conflict, if the situation does not allow a non-violent resolution. In other words, employing the minimum amount of force and imposing the minimum amount of damage possible.

Aikido technique includes pins, throws and also occasional strikes - all of which rely essentially on one's ability to lead, blend, control and finally neutralize the attack out of an immovable center.

Shoshin Aikido Dojo is linked to Aikikai Hombu Dojo, Tokyo, Japan through Aikido Schools of Ueshiba (ASU) under Mitsugi Saotome Shihan, who was a longtime student of O-Sensei.
